An Independent artist, singer and songwriter, born in Nigeria and raised in the midlands of Ireland.
Inspired by soulful artists across the globe such of Erykah Badu, Nina Simone, Amy Winehouse, Asa and Labrinth, Tolü strives to create songs that will forever inspire, heal and provoke thoughtfulness as she encounters and shares challenges and growth in her own life.
Tolü started singing in church at the age of 8. The simple act of leading a hymn slowly grew into leading praise and worship and eventually assisting her local Redeem Church choir at 16.
After entering and winning a national gospel singing competition and releasing ‘Guide me all the way’ she began to discover her own voice, becoming bolder and more confident. A difficult period of questioning her faith led to her next song called ‘Reflection’.
Struggling to overcome the loss of a three year relationship and the basis of her faith she found the strength to venture bravely into the unknown once more. Her single ‘Goodbye’ came to light - “a reminder to let go of the negative people or energy around you who do not support or believe in you”. The song became anthemic for many across the UK and Ireland, reaching over half a million streams on Spotify.
Her latest single ‘Let Me In’ made rotation on radio shows like RTE 2FM Ireland and made it on Spotify’s playlists like New Music Friday UK and Easy. Eearly 2019, Tolü Makay teamed up with a Berlin-based artist who owned an independent label called 'Welcome to the New World' to be the featured artist on the single ‘The Greatest Gift’ (with over 80,000 views on Youtube and 30,000 streams on Spotify). This led to her signing with the Berlin-based record label right afterwards.
Tolü was selected as one of Ireland’s “ones to watch” for 2019 by Dave Allen and is currently working on a project about personal journey into confidence, stages of self-love and using ones voice.
